Do You Need Special Insurance for a Road Trip or Summer Travel in Washington?

Summer in Washington is hard to beat. Before you pack the cooler and hit the highway, take a few minutes to review your auto insurance coverage. Your existing policy may cover more than you think, but there are some gaps worth knowing about.

What Your Auto Policy Typically Covers

Your personal auto insurance generally follows you and your vehicle, so coverage doesn’t stop at the Washington state line. Liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage typically apply on out-of-state trips just as they do at home. That said, policy details vary, so reviewing your declarations page before you leave is a smart move.

Coverage Areas to Review Before You Go

A few specific situations are worth checking on ahead of your trip:

  • Rental car coverage: Your auto policy may extend to rental vehicles, but the scope of that coverage can vary by policy. Confirm with your agent before declining the rental counter’s add-on coverage.
  • Roadside assistance: Not all policies include roadside assistance. If yours doesn’t, a standalone plan or endorsement can add towing, fuel delivery, and lockout help.
  • Personal belongings: Auto policies typically don’t cover stolen luggage or gear. Your renters insurance or homeowners insurance may provide some protection, but check your policy for specifics.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage: Washington is an at-fault state, meaning the driver who causes an accident is responsible for resulting damages. UM/UIM coverage is not required in Washington, but insurers must offer it, and you must reject it in writing if you choose to decline it.
